The Tennessee Association of Professional Interpreters and Translators (TAPIT), the National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators (NAJIT)and CAN-LEARN ( University of Tennessee College of Law ) invite you to attend this Training Workshop on April 12, 2008 at The University of Tennessee College of Law, Room 136.

This advanced Spanish-English workshop for practicing court interpreters will give participants an opportunity to become familiar with the terminology of jury instructions, as well as to practice interpreting authentic texts.

The morning training  will cover a review of basic jury charges and terminology posing difficulties for interpretation into Spanish. In addition, resources for facilitating terminology research will also be presented.

In the afternoon, participants will practice sight translation of written jury instructions, after which they will work with recordings of key jury instructions during simultaneous interpretation practice. The training event will conclude with questions and answers and final remarks about this highly specialized area of judicial interpretation.

Cost:    $100 non-members; $75 for TAPIT members

This workshop has been approved by the Tennessee Administrative Office of the Courts for 5 foreign language credits and 2.5 general credits.

About the presenter:

Holly Mikkelson is Associate Professor of Translation and Interpretation at the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation, Monterey Institute of International Studies. She is an ATA-certified translator (S>E, E>S) and a state and federally certified court interpreter who has taught translation and interpreting for over 30 years. She is the author of the Acebo interpreter training manuals as well as numerous articles on translation and interpretation, and is a co-author of Fundamentals of Court Interpretation:  Theory, Policy and Practice. Professor Mikkelson has consulted with many state and private entities on interpreter testing and training and has presented lectures and workshops to interpreters and related professionals throughout the world.
